General Education Core

McCall College seeks to provide students with educational experiences that will develop their ability to think clearly and critically, to express themselves accurately, and to become aware of the rich and varied areas of knowledge. Concepts introduced in the General Education Core will be reinforced and developed through each student’s chosen course of study.

The faculty has identified 10 goals of the General Education program. These goals will be introduced at a foundational level in the General Education Core but are intended to be reinforced and assessed throughout the curriculum. Three of the goals will be addressed specifically in major and major-related course work.

Certificate in General Studies

A Certificate in General Studies provides students with a well-rounded education that covers many different aspects from the college curriculum. It is designed to enable students to combine courses from many different disciplines and still obtain a college credential. General studies provides students with the ability to take courses the same way they did in high school, with no one subject dominating their studies. General Studies students are given an education to help them advance in the marketplace, without forcing them to focus on one specific discipline. Additionally, students who are not sure which field to pursue will begin as a general study student; when a specific path becomes appealing, the student may then choose that department or division.

General Studies Allowed Coursework (Program Plan)

Any specific requirements for General Studies students are listed on individual program plans.

General Studies Requirements

A student who chooses General Studies as a study direction must complete the following for an academic certificate:

  • Declare a General Studies program of study. This requires completion of a Program Information Form (PIF) from the Academic Dean's Office, at which time the student will be assigned an academic advisor.
  • Complete the General Education Core requirements for an academic certificate.
  • Complete a 22-hour General Studies Program. From those 22 hours, a student will complete the following:
  • Take one course from at least three divisions; these three courses may not duplicate any of the student’s General Education Core coursework.
  • Complete any other coursework set by the Academic Dean, according to one's General Studies Program Plan.
  • Limit experiential coursework (e.g. practicums; internships; co-op education) within the 22 hour requirement to 6 hours.
  • Complete a 290 Directed Study (1 hour) under the direction of a Divisional Dean, Department Chair, or the Academic Dean
  • Complete all other College requirements for graduation. These include, but may not be limited to the following:
  • Satisfactory completion of 64 semester hours, with a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average for the General Education Core.
  • A minimum of 32 academic hours from McCall College.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Program Plan as outlined above.
